Celebrating women In Architecture

Join the Conversation with YOKO YARITA

Yoko Yarita, AIA is the Co-Founder of ROKK Architecture. She has practiced Base Building, Interior Architecture for new construction and Adaptive Reuse/Renovations for two decades. Growing up in Tokyo, Japan, Yoko always had an affinity for art and math, which inspired her interest in architecture from a young age. A visit to a “mind-blowing” Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit further confirmed Yoko’s aspirations. Yoko also knew that she wanted to own her own company one day, and through hard work and persistence, she has achieved that goal. However, her journey has not been without challenges as she constantly had to assert her strong voice, artistic expression, and technical skills in a male-dominated sector. Amidst common challenges, she drew strength and inspiration from other women leaders in the industry, sharing advice, experiences, and collective purpose. Throughout her career, Yoko has learned that it is not enough for women merely to have a seat at the table; they need to use their voices and be an active part of the discussion. She believes that while the industry is slowly changing and there are many more female leaders than ever, there is still more work to do. In her opinion, the responsibility falls upon firm leaders to recognize unique contributions and present leadership opportunities for talented women in the industry.
